I have prior to this endured forced marches with 80 pound packs, 10 miles hikes with 3-4000 ft elevation changes, and various other somewhat insane extremes, yet I have never run a marathon.. always been too smart.
Well at 36 I have decided to run a marathon, giving myself 10 months to train / raise funds (for cancer). I will be running in the Kansas City Marathon this coming Oct, should be fun. So any tips anyone has would be great. I have a training schedule already, I plan on adding to it, mostly just cross training with some trail running to get ready for the hills. I do need help with shoes, gels, sports drinks vs. water, etc. I will be in here every week or so to check back in. |

Hi sumoman, good for you deciding to do da marathon!
Shoes - make sure they are right for you. Go to a knowledgeable running store and get the right kind for you. Sports drinks - I like Gatorade and Powerade, but make sure you try them in training several times, before you try using these drinks in the marathon. Also, make sure you are well hydrated for your long runs - bring enough fluids for them. Anything else you need? |

Hey Sumoman,
I am planning on running my first marathon in Feb 2008; The Austin AT&T Marathon with my wife. I don't have the endurance experience you have and I will be 38 when I run it. I am looking for training tips as well. I downloaded a training program from runnersworld.com but I don't like it. I would prefer to run longer distances when I feel like I can run them, and run shorter distances when I feel more tired. My shoes are great, New Balance 608s. But I have no idea about sport drinks, when to drink them and how much. Right now I just drink water. I am 6'4" 235 lbs and I am running about 30 miles a week, 5 miles a day 6 days a week about 10 minute miles. I will be here every week as well so I will check back too. I hope your training is going well.
